The History of Cafe Bustelo

A century ago, Gregorio Bustelo, a young and ambitious Spaniard, arrived in East Harlem. A man obsessed with wanderlust, Gregorio traveled to many Latin American cities, including Havana, Cuba, the cultural capital. He became a well-known name in Latin coffee circles for his espresso-style coffee.

DEEP LATIN ROOTS, BORNE IN EAST HALEM IN 1928.

Gregorio’s passion for great Latin coffee and his commitment to his community were the three main reasons he built his business. Gregorio created the rich, delicious flavors consumers now know as Cafe Bustelo. This is a true Latin espresso-style coffee.

He started by selling his coffee to East Harlem theater patrons. Later, he hoped to own his own roaster. Gregorio opened a New York City shopfront on 5th Avenue in 1928 using the money he had earned while working at Hotel Pennsylvania. It was the first coffee roaster to serve all Latino communities. In the 1930’s, Gregorio started selling Café Bustelo coffee in Latino-owned bodegas. He also maintained close friendships with owners who he considered his family.

LATIN-INSPIRED COFEE FROM THE BARRIO TO CUPS EVERYWHERE

Angelina and Angelina fell in love, and they married. The couple built a successful coffee business. Cafe Bustelo was founded by Angelina and brewed espresso-style coffee of high quality with bold flavors. Cafe Bustelo coffee has seen a significant increase in distribution over the years. However, Cafe Bustelo is still highly sought after by Cafe Bustelo fans today.
